Work-Place Violence: What School Nurses Need to Know

Summary

It is estimated that over 70% of nurses working in various capacities experience work place violence, howver, it is extremely under-recognized and under-reported by the registered nurse population. Registered nurses in the school setting need to understand what constitutes work place violence, the factors which make it more likely, and the importance of reporting these incidents.

Requirements for Successful Completion: To receive contact hours for this continuing education activity, the participant must attend the entire presentation and complete and submit the evaluation form. Once successful completion has been verified, a “Certificate of Successful Completion” will be awarded for .91 contact hours. This activity will expire on August 9, 2020.

Conflicts of Interest: The Nurse Planner has determined that no one who has the ability to control the content of this CNE activity – planning committee members and presenters/authors/content reviewers – has a conflict of interest.

Approval Statement: The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association – Approver, an accredited approver with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Presenters
Amanda Simonton, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC
Amanda is a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, licensed and trained to treat behavioral health concerns across the lifespan. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, she is currently completing her PhD at UT Austin. Her clinical and research focus is to improve recovery for individuals with substance use disorders, particularly those with opioid use disorder.
